Client - Biodexa Pharma

Role - Formulation Scientist

Overview

Biodexa Pharma ( formerly known as Midatech Pharma) focusses on the research and development of medicines for rare cancers via both in-house and partnered programmes. Using its proprietary platform drug delivery technologies, the company develops improved chemotherapeutics or new immunotherapeutics, focussing on improving bio-delivery and bio-distribution of medicines or agents to areas of the body to exert their actions in an effective, safe and precise manner.

With exciting growth plans the company’s blueprint for success is inspired by developing and advancing treatments and platform technologies that will make a difference for both patients and healthcare workers.

The Role

To support the company’s growth plans the Executive Team had identified a need to recruit a Formulation Scientist who would play a key role in the R&D of these novel formulations and technologies. A vital requirement for the role was that the candidate needed experience in formulating large molecule APIs and be familiar with handling and characterising protein-based formulations.

Given that this role was key within the R&D function it was also important that the right candidate would be able to base themselves in the Cardiff, within a commutable distance of the laboratory which would be their main location of employment

Approach & Outcome

The company engaged RMG on a retained executive search (headhunting) basis to find the right candidate for the role.

This process began by establishing which companies would have individuals with large molecule experience and then identify the relevant employees with these to proactively approach and gain their interest in the proposition.

With large molecule experience being a highly specialist skill, and therefore a smaller pool of talent, RMG prepared the client to recruit from a wider geographical base to ensure that the company had access to the best talent. It was then down to our team to help the negotiations to encourage the right candidate to relocate.

Due to an extensive research and a compelling approach led by RMG the company was able to entice a Large Molecule Formulation Scientist based in the Midlands to relocate to Cardiff.

The three-stage interview process was thorough and ran seamlessly in eight weeks. An offer was accepted in February 2021. To ensure that both the candidate and client experienced a smooth transition, RMG continued to ensure constant communication between both parties including offering support and advice to the candidate regarding their relocation.

The level of detail with which we approach negotiations like this is standard in our dealings with clients.  Examples like this demonstrate that when looking for very specific experiences (that might not be available within a client’s commutable distance) recruitment doesn’t, and shouldn’t, stop with the exchange of an employment contract.

RMG values and understands the significance of relocation and continues to support candidates and clients in this journey. We make it our job to ensure that both parties will have a positive experience and a smooth and successful transition into their new relationship.
